ART ISMS?! Making Art by Connecting to Historical Art Movements in the 20th century

How does the past shape our present, and how can our present propel us into the future? Every artist is in conversation with those who came before. Great artists don't just copy the past; they study it, question it, and use it to say something new about their own world.

In ART ISMS?!, students step into the studios of some of the most daring artists of the last century. Each week begins with a close look at a major art movement, such as Surrealism, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, or Minimalism. Through artist stories, image discussions, and sketchbook reflection, students explore the work of artists like Frida Kahlo and Robert Rauschenberg, alongside living artists such as Shirin Neshat, and ask what made each movement bold enough to break the rules of its time.

Then, students head into the studio to put those ideas into practice. Drawing on the themes of identity, home, and environment, they experiment with the techniques and attitudes of each movement. Using drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage, students create original mixed-media compositions that connect the art of the past to their own lives and voices today.

What Students Will Do:

• Explore Real Movements: Investigate the ideas, artists, and historical moments behind Surrealism, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism.
• Master Mixed Media: Practice drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage, building skills with a wide range of materials and techniques.
• Create Original Artwork: Make personal compositions that respond to themes of identity, home, and environment, inspired by the movements they study.
• Share Their Work: Present finished pieces through artist statements, class critiques, or a culminating mini-exhibition.

• Skill Level: Open to all curious minds; no prior art experience required.
