The Red Planet Robot Zoo: Colony Companion Lab

Come to this camp and engineer a Martian robot of your very own. Through the exploration of "useful" robotic wildlife and the survival needs of a Mars base, students will:

  • Engage in a hands-on project designed to build their own Utilily Creature. This isn't just a machine; it is a "Mission-Critical Companion" designed to perform essential tasks—like clearing dust from solar panels or scouting for frozen water—to ensure your team’s Colony thrives.
  • Learn about the intersection of biology and robotics, discovering how "Bio-mimicry" allows engineers to solve Martian challenges. Students will explore how the anatomy of Earth animals (like the grip of a gecko or the navigation of a bat) can be translated into mechanical forms to conquer the Red Planet’s terrain.
  • Learn Adobe Illustrator software for unique additons
  • Fabricate upgrades for the laser cutter to ensure robot animals are created for specialized colony roles.
  • Use modular electronics to take a static build to a responsive living machine. Students will master the transition from a dormant chassis to a reactive creature, learning electronics by adding movement to their pets
  • Fabricate upgrades for specialized colony roles.
